RESEARCH ENTERPRISE

April 17, 2007

The RESEARCH ENTERPRISE is the major mode of communication from the IUPUI Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP). The ENTERPRISE is published monthly, distributed by e-mail, and contains time sensitive research information as well as links to information on grants and contracts, funding opportunities, research compliance, and research centers. This information is updated monthly. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs appreciates your feedback on this publication. Click here for printable RESEARCH ENTERPRISE.

UPDATES

SHORTENED REVIEW CYCLE FOR AMENDED GRANT RO1 APPLICATIONS: The Center for Scientific Review and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have come together to develop a process that shortens the referral and review cycle of R01 applications. This enables a new investigator to resubmit an amended application for the next review meeting, rather than waiting a cycle, thereby shortening the wait time by four months. This is a pilot study which will be evaluated to determine if it should be extended to all new investigators submitting R01 applications. For application conditions, participating study sections, and submission schedule, go to http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-06-013.html or http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-06-060.html. Questions can be directed to Amy Arvin in the IUPUI Office of Research and Sponsored Programs aarvin@iupui.edu or 317.278.5367.

SALARY LIMITATION ON GRANTS, COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS AND CONTRACTS: On January 1, 2007 the NIH set a limit of $186,500 on an investigator’s institutional base salary which is linked to Executive Level I of the Federal pay Scale. NIH grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts that request salary in excess of the salary cap will be adjusted in accordance with the legislative salary limitation. Additional information on the salary limitation can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-051.html. Questions can also be directed to Amy Arvin in the IUPUI Office of Research and Sponsored Programs aarvin@iupui.ed or 317.278.5367.

IDENTIFYING FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Several on-line search tools are available to IUPUI investigators who are interested in identifying funding opportunities in their areas of interest. Several are listed below:

Community of Science (COS): COS is a primary on-line search tool for identifying funding opportunities. To take advantage of this powerful tool, register at http://www.cos.com/login/join.shtml. Once you have completed the short registration process, you can personalize your search by selecting the option entitled “launch your workbench”. You can access federal, local, corporate, foundation, nonprofit and other funding opportunities using key terms and save the results of up to 20 searches and have them delivered to you weekly via email.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) “NIH Guide”: To take advantage of this search tool, register at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/listserv.htm. It allows you to receive discipline specific funding opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via email.

National Science Foundation (NSF) “MyNSF”: To take advantage of this search tool register at http://www.nsf.gov/mynsf/. It allows you to receive discipline specific funding opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via email.

Federal Business Opportunities “FedBizOpps”: FedBizOpps is the single government point-of-entry for Federal government procurement opportunities over $25,000. To take advantage of this search tool, visit http://vsearch1.fbo.gov/servlet/SearchServlet. Opportunities found at this site include, but are not limited to, presolicitations and special notices for research and service contracts for specific projects and some national centers and surveys that would not be found in Grants.gov and may not be found in the Community of Science.

Limited Submission Funding Opportunities : Occasionally a funding agency places a limitation on the number of proposals that can be submitted from a campus or university system. For a description of the upcoming “limited submission” funding opportunities, as well as guidelines and application forms, go to: http://www.srs.indiana.edu/LimSub/LimSub.asp. Questions can be directed to Etta Ward at emward@iupui.edu or 317.278.8427.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Funding opportunities in this section include selected current grant announcements from federal agencies for new initiatives and changes to existing programs. Announcements with limited scope are not listed here but are, instead, sent directly to IUPUI School Deans. For comprehensive coverage of funding opportunities please use the on-line search tools listed above.
