ANNOUNCEMENTS
IUPUI
SCHOOL CENTERS: Effective immediately, IUPUI
schools can create centers and institutes inside their
school without permission from the IUPUI administration.
The center must carry the name of the school. If you
are interested in creating a center or institute within
your school, contact your dean to ensure that appropriate
procedures are followed. Designation as an IUPUI center
or institute still requires the submission of an application
and approval of the IUPUI administration. For more information
go to: http://research.iupui.edu/resg/iupui-center-request.htm
or contact Etta Ward in the IUPUI Office of Research
and Sponsored Programs emward@iupui.edu
or 317.278.8427.
NEW
NIH ROADMAP INITIATIVES: NIH announced four
new initiatives for the NIH Roadmap program. “Microbiome”
and “Epigenetics” will be implemented immediately
with a phased implementation for “Protein capture
tools / Proteome tools” and “Phenotyping
services and tools”.

NEW
NIH NOTICE OF AWARD LETTER: The National Institutes
of Health (NIH) has revised the Notice of Award Letter
(NoA) in order to create a more user friendly document.
NIH has begun issuing the new NoA by attaching the NoA
to an email in PDF format instead of including the NoA
in the text of the email. The NoA encourages investigators
to submit published publications to PubMed Central.
Please note that NIH encourages all award recipients
to become e-mail enabled to allow for the electronic
transmission of the NoA. For additional information
on the enhancements to the NoA visit http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-060.html.
Questions can also be directed to Amy Arvin in the IUPUI
Office of Research and Sponsored Programs aarvin@iupui.edu
or 317.278.5367.
NEW
PROPOSAL AND AWARD POLICIES AT THE NATIONAL SCIENCE
FOUNDATION: New policies and procedures will
go into effect for proposals submitted to the National
Science Foundation (NSF) after June 1, 2007. Changes
are summarized in the new Policies and Procedures Guide
which consists of two parts. Part I includes proposal
preparation and submission guidelines, while Part II
includes documents for administration of grants and
cooperative agreements made by NSF. To access the NSF
Guide, visit http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/papp/nsf07140.pdf.
Questions can also be directed to Amy Arvin in the IUPUI
Office of Research and Sponsored Programs aarvin@iupui.edu
or 317.278.5367.
UPDATES
CHANGES
IN EFFORT OR STATUS OF THE PRINICPAL INVESTIGATOR OR
OTHER KEY PERSONNEL: An “Important Notice”
was released in April establishing the IU policy on
significant changes in effort for the Principal Investigator
(PI) or other key personnel on sponsored projects. For
additional information on when sponsor approval is required
for changes in committed effort visit http://www.fms.indiana.edu/cg/imp_notice/07-2.asp

and Sponsored Programs aarvin@iupui.edu
or 317.278.5367.
NIH
SALARY LIMIT CORRECTION: The salary limit was
misstated in the April edition of the Research Enterprise.
The correct amount of the 2007 NIH salary limitation
on grants, cooperative agreements and contract is $186,600.
Questions can be directed to Amy Arvin in the IUPUI
Office of Research and Sponsored Programs aarvin@iupui.edu

FACTS:
Sixty
five proposals requested support from the IUPUI Research
Support Funds Grants (RSFG) internal funding mechanism
in May, 2007. Fifteen proposals (23%) were funded and
awards totaled $500,000. The next deadline for receipt
of proposals is October 15, 2007.
The following table illustrates total awards to investigators
on the IUPUI campus from July 1, 2006 to May 31, 2007.
The highest indirect cost recovery is on federal awards
and the lowest is on awards from non-profit organizations.

NATIONAL
RESEARCH FACTS:
Research and development expenditures
at all US colleges and universities were $45.7 billion
in fiscal year 2005. Most of these funds ($29.2 billion)
came from federal sources. Seventy five percent of the
expenditures were for basic research. Two-thirds of
these expenditures were at public colleges and universities.
Indiana
ranked 19th among all of the states in research and
development expenditures in 2005. Indiana University,
including all campuses, ranked 51st out of the 630 institutions.
IDENTIFYING
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
Several
on-line search tools are available to IUPUI investigators
who are interested in identifying funding opportunities
in their areas of interest. Several are listed below:
Community
of Science (COS): COS is a primary on-line
search tool for identifying funding opportunities. To
take advantage of this powerful tool, register at http://www.cos.com/login/join.shtml.
Once you have completed the short registration process,
you can personalize your search by selecting the option
entitled “launch your workbench”. You can
access federal, local, corporate, foundation, nonprofit
and other funding opportunities using key terms and
save the results of up to 20 searches and have them
delivered to you weekly via email.
National
Institutes of Health (NIH) “NIH Guide”:
To take advantage of this search tool, register at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/listserv.htm.
It allows you to receive discipline specific funding
opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via email.
National
Science Foundation (NSF) “MyNSF”:
To take advantage of this search tool register at http://www.nsf.gov/mynsf/.
It allows you to receive discipline specific funding
opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via email.
Federal
Business Opportunities “FedBizOpps”:
FedBizOpps is the single government point-of-entry for
Federal government procurement opportunities over $25,000.
To take advantage of this search tool, visit http://vsearch1.fbo.gov/servlet/SearchServlet.
Opportunities found at this site include, but are not
limited to, presolicitations and special notices for
research and service contracts for specific projects
and some national centers and surveys that would not
be found in Grants.gov and may not be found in the Community
of Science.
Limited
Submission Funding Opportunities : Occasionally
a funding agency places a limitation on the number of
proposals that can be submitted from a campus or university
system. For a description of the upcoming “limited
submission” funding opportunities, as well as
guidelines and application forms, go to:
http://www.srs.indiana.edu/LimSub/LimSub.asp. Questions
can be directed to Etta Ward in the IUPUI Office of
Research and Sponsored Programs emward@iupui.edu
or 317.278.8427.
FUNDING
OPPORTUNITIES
Funding
opportunities in this section include selected current
grant announcements from federal agencies for new initiatives
and changes to existing programs. Announcements with
limited scope are not listed here but are, instead,
sent directly to IUPUI School Deans. For comprehensive
coverage of funding opportunities please use the on-line
search tools listed above.
