ANNOUNCEMENTS
INTERNAL
FUNDING MECHANISMS
FACULTY
SPEAK: IUPUI OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS
(R&SP) RESPONDS WITH NEW INTERNAL FUNDING
One of the impediments to grant/contract development
on the IUPUI campus has been lack of adequate time to
prepare proposals due to heavy teaching loads. To address
this problem, the IUPUI R&SP Office has developed
a NEW internal funding mechanism called RELEASE
TIME FOR RESEARCH (RTR). This mechanism will provide
up to $10,000 per investigator to be used to “buy
out” of up to 6 credit hours in a given semester,
3 credits hours in each of 2 consecutive semesters,
or summer salary, in order to provide faculty with time
to prepare grant/contract proposals. This annual internal
funding mechanism will carry an application deadline
of January 15, 2008, and a start date of May 1, 2008.
Application guidelines and forms will be posted on the
research website on the IUPUI home page, under the “internal
funding opportunities” link, by November 30, 2007.

IU
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ANNUAL GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP
The annual GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP, sponsored by the
Indiana University School of Medicine and the IUPUI
Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, will be held
on November 16, 2007 on the IUPUI campus. This workshop
addresses both conceptual and practical aspects of grant
writing. Rather than offer what is typically presented
(little more than how to fill out forms and conform
to instructions) this grant writing workshop emphasizes
idea development, how to write for reviewers, and tips
and strategies for great grantsmanship. This workshop
is appropriate for all faculty members who are contemplating
a competitive application to federal or state agencies
or foundations. For more information, go to: http://cme.medicine.iu.edu/2/scripts/prodView.asp?id=28256.
RESEARCH
COORDINATOR EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Researcher Coordinator Education Program is mandatory
for all new coordinators in the IU School of Medicine.
The Program will be held on October 3 – 5, 2007.
While the program targets new study coordinators, experienced
coordinators and young investigators from all schools/units
on the IUPUI campus are invited to attend. For more
information, go to: http://nursing.iupui.edu/continuing/rcep.
NATIONAL
SCIENCE FOUNDATION WORKSHOP
The National Science Foundation (NSF), Butler University,
and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation will
host a one-day workshop to be held at Butler University
on October 5, 2007. Representatives from the 7 NSF directorates
and the Office of International Science and Engineering
will provide information on the NSF proposal and merit
review process, NSF programs that cut across disciplines,
and will be available, in breakout sessions, to discuss
potential research proposals. There is no registration
fee, but pre-registration is required by September 28,
2007. For more information, go to: http://www.nsf.gov/events/event_summ.jsp?cntn_id=109726.
LIFE
SCIENCES AND INFORMATICS SEMINAR
Michael Evans, President and CEO of AIT laboratories,
will be the keynote speaker at “The Age of Life
Sciences Informatics” seminar to be held on September
21, 2007. For more information, go to: www.kelley.iu.edu/lifesc
or call Roxie Glaze at 812-855-9210.
UPDATES
UPDATE
ON NATIONAL INSTITUTES IF HEALTH GRANT APPLICATION eSUBMISSIONS
The submission of an NIH electronic application through
Grants.gov generates several emails to both the principal
investigator (PI) and the research office (Sponsored
Research Services (SRS). The first email from Grants.gov
will confirm that the application has been received
at Grants.gov. The second Grants.gov email will indicate
if the application passed the Grants.gov validations.
The third and final email will be from the NIH eRA Commons
indicating whether the application is, or is not, accepted
without warnings or errors. The SRS grant specialist
will review the final email that is received and will
inform both the PI and the departmental contact what
action, if any, is necessary. If corrections are needed,
the grant specialist will work closely with the PI and
departmental contact to make those corrections. For
a listing of errors and warnings, go to: http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/files/SF424RR_Validations.pdf.
Questions about this process can be directed to Amy
Harrity at aarvin@iupui.edu
or 317.278.5367.
MANDATORY
USE OF THE ELECTRONIC FINANCIAL STATUS REPORT SYSTEM
NIH eRA COMMONS
Beginning October 1, 2007, NIH will require all Financial
Status Reports (FSRs) (domestic and foreign) to be submitted
using the electronic FSR system located in the eRA Commons.
This includes all initial FSRs being prepared for submission
and any revisions being submitted or re-submitted to
NIH.

on-line search tools are available to IUPUI investigators
who are interested in identifying funding opportunities
in their areas of interest. Several are listed below:
Community
of Science (COS): COS is a primary on-line
search tool for identifying funding opportunities. To
take advantage of this powerful tool, register at http://www.cos.com/login/join.shtml.
Once you have completed the short registration process,
you can personalize your search by selecting the option
entitled “launch your workbench”. You can
access federal, local, corporate, foundation, nonprofit
and other funding opportunities using key terms and
save the results of up to 20 searches and have them
delivered to you weekly via email.
