RESEARCH ENTERPRISE

June 21, 2006

The RESEARCH ENTERPRISE is the new mode of communication from the IUPUI Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP). The ENTERPRISE is published monthly, distributed by e-mail, and contains time sensitive research information as well as links to information on grants and contracts, funding opportunities, research compliance, and research centers. This information is in the process of being reorganized and will be updated monthly. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs appreciates your feedback on this publication.

EVENTS

The annual GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP will be held on November 13, 2006 on the IUPUI campus. This event has received rave reviews such as:

“One of the best uses of my time at any seminar ever”
“Excellent in every respect”
“I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in writing grants”
“I only wish I had this information years ago”

This workshop has previously been sponsored exclusively by the IU School of Medicine. This year, for the first time, the workshop is co-sponsored by the IUPUI Research and Sponsored Programs Office in order to encourage investigators from all over the IUPUI campus to take advantage of this outstanding opportunity. This workshop is appropriate for all faculty who are contemplating a competitive application to federal or state agencies and foundations in either basic science or clinical research. The workshop emphasizes idea development, how to write for grant reviewers and tips and strategies for great grantsmanship.

Registration will open in late August. Watch for notices and additional information in the July issue of the RESEARCH ENTERPRISE.

PERSONALIZED FUNDING ALERTS

The Community of Science will notify you by email of new funding opportunities in your research area each week. There is no charge for IUPUI faculty to use this service which is made available through an IUPUI-IU subscription. To set up your profile, including key words for identification of appropriate funding opportunities, go to http://registration.cos.com/cos/basic.html. If you would like assistance in setting up your profile please contact Etta Ward at 317.278.8427 / emward@iupui.edu or Alicia Gahimer at 317.278.0249 / algahime@iupui.edu.

EXPLORATORY PROGRAM IN SYSTEMS BIOLOGY (R33)

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the NIH invites applications for collaborative research projects to initiate high-risk, high impact research by multidisciplinary teams of investigators. These projects will combine computational modeling and simulation approaches with experimental validation of model predictions to advance understanding the normal physiology and perturbations associated with heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) disorders. Application due: September 25, 2006.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH COLLABORATION (R03)

The Fogarty International Research Collaboration in Biomedical, Behavioral, or Social Sciences Research Award (R03) facilitates collaborative research between scientists supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and investigators in developing countries. Application deadline: September 21, 2006. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-06-437.html

CANCER PROGNOSIS AND PREDICTION (R33)

The Phase II Developmental Research in Cancer Prognosis and Prediction (R33) Program of the NIH supports research projects that evaluate the utility and application of new strategies for determining prognosis or predicting response to therapy. The proposed project should test whether application of a strategy will provide clinical benefit to a defined set of cancer patients.
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-435.html A parallel funding opportunity announcement (FOA) of identical scientific scope solicits applications using the NIH R21/R33 (Phased Application) grant mechanism. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-434.html
Standard NIH deadlines apply: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/submissionschedule.htm

MOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF CANCER

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored Innovative Technologies for Molecular Analysis of Cancer (IMAT) Program, aimed at the development and integration of novel and emerging technologies in the support of cancer research, diagnosis, and treatment, now encompasses an array of 14 closely-related Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs). To identify the appropriate FOA, see:
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-CA-06-025.html

DIABETES CENTERS

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the NIH anticipates awarding three Diabetes Center grants. Letter of Intent is due on June 26, 2006. Application deadline is July 26, 2006. Diabetes Endocrinology Research Centers (DERCs) support three primary research-related activities: biomedical research cores, a Pilot and Feasibility (P&F) program, and an Enrichment program. Diabetes Research and Training Centers (DRTCs) possess all elements of a DERC, with additional dedicated core services and Pilot and Feasibility (P&F) awards to support research in diabetes prevention and control.

MINORITY HEALTH AND HEALTH DISPARITIES

The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) of the NIH invites applications for establishing comprehensive NCMHD research centers (P60). Comprehensive NCMHD research centers should propose to conduct original and innovative basic laboratory, behavioral, clinical, or population based research directed toward improving minority health, eliminating health disparities, or both, in any of the following diseases or conditions: cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, infant mortality, mental health, and obesity. Application due: August 10, 2006.

SUPPLEMENTS TO PROMOTE DIVERSITY IN HEALTH RESEARCH

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the NIH will consider supporting more than one graduate student or postdoctoral fellow on a grant when requests are made in response to the NIH program “Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research”. Investigators must contact their program administrators in NIGMS before applying for supplements.

PREVENTING OBESITY

The NIH School-Based Interventions to Prevent Obesity Program encourages the formation of partnerships between academic institutions and school systems in order to develop and implement controlled, school-based intervention strategies designed to reduce the prevalence of obesity in childhood. This initiative also encourages evaluative comparisons of different intervention strategies, as well as the use of methods to detect synergistic interactions between different types of interventions. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-415.html This funding opportunity will utilize the R01 mechanism, but will be run in parallel with a program announcement of identical scientific scope that will utilize the exploratory/developmental Grant (R21) http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-417.html
or the Small Grant (R03) http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-416.html grant mechanism. Standard NIH deadlines apply: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/submissionschedule.htm.

DENTAL MATERIALS

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) of the NIH invites R21 applications focused on the use of nanotechnology and nanoscience to design and develop new dental composite materials with superior properties. The expected outcomes are new formulations for dental composites with improved bonding to dentin and enamel surfaces, durability, esthetics, and biocompatibility. Applications due: August 24, 2006.
