EVENTS
GRANT
WRITING WORKSHOP
The
annual GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP will be held on November
13, 2006 on the IUPUI campus. This workshop has previously
been sponsored exclusively by the IU School of Medicine.
This year, for the first time, the workshop is co-sponsored
by the IUPUI Research and Sponsored Programs Office
in order to encourage investigators from all over
the IUPUI campus to take advantage of this outstanding
opportunity. This workshop is appropriate for all
faculty who are contemplating a competitive application
to federal or state agencies or foundations. The workshop
emphasizes idea development, how to write for grant
reviewers and tips and strategies for great grantsmanship.
For a detailed description of the workshop and registration
instructions please go to: http://cme.medicine.iu.edu/?id=24177

UPDATES
OCTOBER
1: AVOID LAST MINUTE RUSH FOR NIH DEADLINE
The
October 1 NIH grant application receipt deadline is
quickly approaching. The number of applications submitted
by IUPUI investigators is expected to be larger than
ever this year. IUPUI Sponsored Research Services
(SRS) requests that they receive your proposal at
least three (3) business days prior to the
NIH receipt deadline. If you need additional
time to complete the narrative portion of the proposal,
please consider the partial proposal process or the
budget pre-certification process. Additional information
is available at: http://www.iupui.edu/%7Erspcommu/2005/special-june-05.htm
- 'New Alternatives for Avoiding the Last Minute Rush'.
The
IUPUI Research and Sponsored Programs Office believes
that proposal submission is of paramount importance.
Therefore, when proposals are submitted to SRS so
close to the agency receipt deadline that a full review
by SRS is not possible, the proposal will be submitted
to the finding agency and a full review of the proposal
will be conducted after proposal submission. We anticipate
that such cases will be few. Any issues that are found
during the full review of the proposal will be discussed
with the investigator and, if necessary, addressed
at the time an award is made. If a proposal is found
to violate federal, state, agency, and/or University
guidelines, the University reserves the right to withdraw
the proposal. Questions can be directed to Michelle
Artmeier, Director of Proposal Services, at 278.8644
or any IUPUI Grant Specialist at 274.8285.

in their areas of interest. Several are listed below:
Community of Science (COS): COS is
a primary on-line search tool for identifying funding
opportunities. To take advantage of this powerful
tool, register at http://www.cos.com/login/join.shtml.
Once you have completed the short registration process,
you can personalized your search by selecting the
option entitled “launch your workbench”.
You can search for funding opportunities using key
terms and save the results of up to 20 searches and
have them directly delivered to you weekly via email.
National Institutes of Health (NIH) “NIH
Guide”: To take advantage of this tool,
register at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/listserv.htm.
It allows you to receive discipline specific funding
opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via
email.
National Science Foundation (NSF) “
MyNSF”: To take advantage of this tool
register at http://www.nsf.gov/mynsf/.

RESEARCH FACTS:
The
number of grant and contract proposals submitted by
IUPUI investigators rose during the past year
The
number of grant and contract awards to IUPUI investigators
rose during the past year
The
increase in the number of grant and contract awards
to IUPUI investigators was greater than the increase
in the number of proposals submitted by IUPUI investigators
during the past year which indicates that IUPUI investigators
continue to become more successful at writing competitive
grant and contract proposals
The
amount of external research funding obtained by IUPUI
investigators now exceeds a quarter of a billion dollars
a year
94%
of the external funding obtained by IUPUI investigators
was for grants and contracts in the area of health
and life sciences in 2005-2006
NATIONAL
RESEARCH FACTS:
In
2004-2005, the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Roadmap Initiative awarded 379 grants to 326 investigators
from 134 academic institutions. Slightly more than
17% of the investigators were new to NIH. The success
rate for proposals in 2005 was 17.2% (up from 13.2%
in 2004). For 2006, the Roadmap budget is 1.2% ($329
million) of the total NIH funding.
Source: http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/pdf/NIHRoadmap-FactSheet-Aug06.pdf
The
number of grant applications submitted to the NIH
during the past 2 years (2003-2005) equals the number
of applications submitted in the prior 5 years (1999-2003)
The
number of U.S. academic patents quadrupled from approximately
800 in 1988 to more than 3,200 in 2003. The increase
in patents was highly concentrated in the area of
