RESEARCH ENTERPRISE

October 10, 2006

The RESEARCH ENTERPRISE is the new mode of communication from the IUPUI Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP). The ENTERPRISE is published monthly, distributed by e-mail, and contains time sensitive research information as well as links to information on grants and contracts, funding opportunities, research compliance, and research centers. This information is in the process of being reorganized and will be updated monthly. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs appreciates your feedback on this publication. EVENTS

GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP

The annual GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP will be held on November 13, 2006 on the IUPUI campus. This workshop has previously been sponsored exclusively by the IU School of Medicine. This year, for the first time, the workshop is co-sponsored by the IUPUI Research and Sponsored Programs Office in order to encourage investigators from all over the IUPUI campus to take advantage of this outstanding opportunity. This workshop is appropriate for all investigators who are contemplating a competitive application to federal or state agencies or foundations. The workshop emphasizes idea development, how to write for grant reviewers and tips and strategies for proposal preparation. For a detailed description of the workshop and registration instructions please go to: http://cme.medicine.iu.edu/?id=24177 .

UPDATES

IDENTIFYING FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

On-line search tools are available to IUPUI investigators who are interested in identifying funding opportunities in their areas of interest. Several are listed below:

Community of Science (COS): COS is a primary on-line search tool for identifying funding opportunities. To take advantage of this powerful tool, register at http://www.cos.com/login/join.shtml. Once you have completed the short registration process, you can personalized your search by selecting the option entitled “launch your workbench”. You can search for funding opportunities using key terms and save the results of up to 20 searches and have them directly delivered to you weekly via email.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) “NIH Guide”: To take advantage of this tool, register at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/listserv.htm. It allows you to receive discipline specific funding opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via email.

National Science Foundation (NSF) “ MyNSF”: To take advantage of this tool register at http://www.nsf.gov/mynsf/. It allows you to receive discipline specific funding opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via email.

LIMITED SUBMISSION FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Occasionally a funding agency places a limitation on the number of proposals that can be submitted from a campus or university system. For a description of the upcoming “limited submission” funding opportunities, guidelines and application forms, go to: http://www.srs.indiana.edu/LimSub/LimSub.asp. Questions can be directed to Etta Ward at emward@iupui.edu or 317.278.8427.

DID YOU KNOW?

CAMPUS RESEARCH FACTS:

The success rate of IUPUI investigators in obtaining NIH funding for new grant proposals (23.5%) was greater than the NIH average success rate for all new proposals (20.6%) in 2005-2006

64% of the external funding on the IUPUI campus was awarded for research (vs teaching or service) in 2005-2006

56% of the external funding on the IUPUI campus came from federal grants, the majority from the NIH) in 2005-2006

58% of faculty on the IUPUI campus chose research as their area of excellence for promotion and tenure in 2005-2006

NATIONAL RESEARCH FACTS:

The worldwide S&E publications output captured in Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index grew from approximately 466,000 articles in 1988 to nearly 700,000 in 2003.

The number of U.S. scientific publications remained essentially flat between 1992 and 2003, causing the U.S. share of world article output to decline from 38% to 30% between 1988 and 2003.

The income to U.S. academic institutions from licensing was more than $850 million in FY 2003, more than double the amount in FY 1997, and new licenses and options increased by more than 40% during this period.
