National
Institutes of Health (NIH) requires electronic submission
of RO1 Grants
Beginning February 5, 2007 NIH is requiring that Research
Project Grants (RO1s) be submitted electronically via
Grants.gov. All applications with a receipt date of
February 5, 2007 and beyond will require electronic
submission. For electronic submission go to http://www.grants.gov.
This website contains a link entitled “apply for
grants”. When you access this site you will be
able to choose grant application packages for a variety
of grant mechanisms. All electronic grant application
packages use the same standard form 424. The 424 form
is required for all electronic grant submissions. Paper
copies of RO1 applications will no longer be accepted
by NIH after February 5, 2007. For additional information
on the R01 submission transition, visit http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/news_11-3-06.htm.
Questions can also be directed to Amy Arvin in the IUPUI
Office of Research and Sponsored Programs aarvin@iupui.edu
or 317.278.5367
National
Institutes of Health Changes Standard Submission Receipt
Dates
NIH announced changes in standard grant submission receipt
dates. This change in dates affects applications submitted
to NIH, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ),
and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH). The new dates are effective as of January 2007
and will apply to both paper and electronic applications.
Changes were made to receipt dates in order to improve
electronic system response time, to maintain a better
workflow at Grants.gov and NIH help desks, and to help
alleviate a back up of proposals at applicant institutions.
Please note that Applications for Request for Applications
(RFAs) and Program Announcements (PAs, PARs, PASs) with
special receipt dates continue to be due on the specified
dates listed in the Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA). For additional information, see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-001.html.
Questions can be directed to Michelle Artmeier in the
IUPUI Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at martmeie@iupui.edu
or 317.278.8644.

IDENTIFYING FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES: On-line
search tools are available to IUPUI investigators who
are interested in identifying funding opportunities
in their areas of interest. Several are listed below:
Community
of Science (COS): COS is a primary on-line
search tool for identifying funding opportunities. To
take advantage of this powerful tool, register at http://www.cos.com/login/join.shtml.
Once you have completed the short registration process,
you can personalize your search by selecting the option
entitled “launch your workbench”. You can
search for funding opportunities using key terms and
save the results of up to 20 searches and have them
directly delivered to you weekly via email.
National
Institutes of Health (NIH) “NIH Guide”:
To take advantage of this search tool, register at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/listserv.htm.
It allows you to receive discipline specific funding
opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via email.
National
Science Foundation (NSF) “MyNSF”:
To take advantage of this search tool register at http://www.nsf.gov/mynsf/.
It allows you to receive discipline specific funding
opportunities that are delivered to you weekly via email.
Limited
Submission Funding Opportunities: Occasionally
a funding agency places a limitation on the number of
proposals that can be submitted from a campus or university
system. For a description of the upcoming “limited
submission” funding opportunities, guidelines
and application forms, go to: http://www.srs.indiana.edu/LimSub/LimSub.asp.
Questions can be directed to Etta Ward at emward@iupui.edu
or 317.278.8427.

IUPUI
RESEARCH FACTS:
In fiscal year 2005-2006, eight IUPUI
schools had awards totaling 2 million or more. The School
of Medicine had the largest award total followed by
the School of Liberal Arts. The School of Medicine had
the largest dollar increase in awards (22 million) and
Engineering and Technology had the greatest percent
increase in award dollars (61%).
In
2005 IUPUI ranked 57th among public institutions in
federal dollars, 47th in total research dollars expended,
and 43rd in number of postdoctoral fellows.
NATIONAL
RESEARCH FACTS:
The
average age of Ph.D. scientists obtaining their first
faculty position in 2004 was 38.5 years.
The
average age of scientists getting their first R01 award
in 2004 was 42 years.
The number of R01 grants funded on the first submission
declined from 1556 in 2002 (success rate of 18%) to
970 in 2005 (success rate of 9%).
The
success rate for R01 grants doubles when the application
is revised and resubmitted.
The
success rate for renewal of R01 grants declined from
49% in 2002 to 32% in 2005.
